Today's Summary:
Lean Article - 9 Lean Leadership Practices To Get The Best Performance Out Of Your Team
Lean Podcast - Team Leadership Journey
Lean Event -International Forum on Takt Production in Construction
Real Life Lean - Communication Boards Go Virtual
Lean Article
Building and empowering your teams are the only things that are going to lead to successful lean implementation on your projects. You cannot utilize lean as a one man show or in a silo. You need to share lean ideas, tools and principles with your team. In the article below, Sean Graystone shares 9 practices to get the best performance out of your team. I really like what he talks about in #4, with Vulnerability Based Trust. There are great points in this article that any leader can learn from. Total read time - 5min.
Lean Podcast
This episode of the CM Mentors is filled with great leadership nuggets. While not focused 100% on lean construction, this podcast focuses on practices and mindsets that a good leader must have. Eric Schultz shares great resources and mindsets to take your leadership skills to the next level. I love the section of the podcast, around 26 minutes in, where he discusses pitfalls that new leaders face and how to work through them. I found myself writing down quote after quote from Eric, so I figured I would share some of them here.
Good leaders lead teams effectively, not individuals
Teams have a common goal and a common outcome
Leadership is less about being right as an individual and more about the outcome of the team
Lean Event
After last weeks newsletter being focused on Takt, Spencer Easton reached out to share the event below with me. The P2SL International Forum on Takt Production will be hosted online on May 23. Per the website, this events "aim is to disseminate takt production knowledge, spur new ideas, foster discussion, and increase collaboration between takt experts and enthusiasts from countries around the world." Click the link below to be taken to the homepage and from there you can register for this event.
Real Life Lean - Lean practices in the real world
Building off of last weeks team communication improvement, our team has made some changes. We may be late to the game, but we recently were introduced to Mural, the online whiteboard and collaboration tool. I am so proud of my team, as they saw this as an even better tool to collaborate and ensure that things were being covered on the project. We ended up turning this into somewhat of a scrum board for the team to divide and conquer tasks on site. The team has scheduled daily 5 min check ins, along with a weekly 30 minute clean up/whiteboard health meeting to make sure we are getting maximum value out of the board. In the 5 days we have been using this, I have seen more constraints fall off our constraints board and the team taking true ownership of their work. It is amazing to see. Best of all, Mural is FREE!
